HOLY: A Consecrated Ode to Self-Care

Cover Art for Holy by Jamila Woods

The allusion to divinitive writing in poetic assent is familiar to Jamila Woods’ song Holy. In reference to biblical versing, Woods asserts artistic licence in melody that despite of tough situations, she is fearless in love instead. With a familiar distress of a people frenzied with anxiety and looming nerves based on worldly uncertainties, Holy is an affirmation to many that with self-love there is confidence.

With shots of Woods in a bathtub and a dancer winsomely whirling from bed, the visuals to Holy ascertain the habitual regimens of resting and cleansing as self-care. Sharing the concept of the video in a press-release, Woods stated, “I wanted to represent self-care as a sacred act, to make ordinary daily rituals in bedrooms and bathtubs feel magical.” Directed by Sam Bailey, co-creator of Brown Girls, the features in Holy ascertain the significance of self-love as an instrument of personal revolution.

Alongside the release of the music video to Holy, Wood’s highly-acclaimed debut album HEAVN, released in July 2016, will be getting an official digital and physical release on Jagjaguwar and Chicago's independent hip-hop label Closed Sessions. A phenomenal artist, Woods is widely known for her collaborative works with Donnie Trumpet, Macklemore and Chance the Rapper - who is featured on her album on a track called LSD.
